Catholic wedding encompasses a series of traditional rituals - including the readings. One can personalize the wedding, but within the boundaries of the church rules. It is possible to choose the wedding readings, if the wedding does not fall on a Sunday or a holy day. The wedding readings consist of the following.

  • Old Testament reading: The Hebrew Bible, it is universally recognized
  • Responsorial Psalms: Songs from the Bible
  • The Four Gospels: Explains birth, life, ministry, crucifixion and the resurrection of Jesus
  • New Testament readings: It is called as the Greek Testament, readings from second part of Christian Bible

Ruth's statement of love (book of Ruth 1:16-17)

Ruth said,

"Urge me not to leave you, or to return from following you; for where you go, I will go; and where you lodge, I will lodge; tour people shall be my people, and your God my God. Wherever you die, I will die, and there will I be buried. May Lord do so to me, and more also, if anything but death parts me from you."
"This is the word of the Lord"

On those who hope in his love."

Our soul is waiting for the Lord.
The Lord is our help and our shield.
In him do our hearts find joy.

John 4:7-12- God Is Love

"Beloved, let us love one another,
Because love is God;
Everyone who loves is begotten by God
And knows God.
Whoever is without love does not know God,
For God is love.
In this way the love of God was revealed to us:
God sent his only-begotten Son into the world
So that we might have life through him.
In this is love:
not that we have loved God, but that he loved us
and sent his Son as expiation for our sins.
Beloved if God so loved us,
We also must love one another.
No one has ever seen God.
Yet, if we love one another, God remains in us,
and his love is brought to perfection in us."

According To John 15:9-12

Jesus to his disciples:

"As the Father loves me, so I also love you.
Remain in my love.
If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love,
just as I have kept my Father's commandments
and remain in his love.
"I have told you this so that my joy might be in you
and your joy might be complete.
This is my commandment: love one another as I love you."

Catholic Wedding Reading #2: Genesis 2:18-24

And they will be two in one flesh.

Sample from the book of Genesis

The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh. Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of man." For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

The word of the Lord.

This means that the man and the woman become one flesh after marriage and are inseparable. Both of them are expected to be committed to each other. There should love, trust, and respect for each other throughout their lifetime. This is the reason why they should leave their homes to start a new one of their own. Here they should carry out all their responsibilities that come along with a marriage that includes raising a family.
